PKI-Based Passkeys Lead The Way For A Passwordless Future

On World Password Day (May 2nd), Google announced that over 400 million user accounts worldwide are using Google Passkeys, with more than 1 billion authentications in less than a year. Passkeys are now the preferred authentication method for Google Accounts, surpassing other forms of two-factor authentication like SMS OTPs and app-based OTPs combined. Google plans to expand passkey support to high-risk users in its Advanced Protection Program, such as campaign workers and journalists. Passkeys offer a simpler and more secure authentication experience by using biometrics or a screen lock PIN. They work on public key cryptography, generating a unique key pair on the user’s device for secure authentication. Passkeys provide stronger security, faster login times, and a seamless login experience across multiple devices. The transition to passwordless authentication methods, like PKI-based passkeys, is becoming increasingly popular due to their enhanced security and user experience.
