The first U.S. utility-scale offshore wind farm entered service Thursday off the coast of Long Island, as New York state launches its goal to reach 70% renewable energy by 2030 and to install 9 GW of offshore wind by 2035.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the completion of South Fork Wind shows the state will aggressively pursue climate change solutions to save future generations; South Fork can generate 132 MW of wind energy to power more than 70K homes.
The 12-turbine project is a joint venture between Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) and Denmark’s Ørsted (OTCPK:DNNGY).
The two companies will next turn their attention to the much larger Revolution Wind project, which will be Rhode Island and Connecticut’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, capable of powering more than 350K homes next year.
New York’s officials said last month they planned to negotiate a contract with Eversource (ES) and Ørsted (OTCPK:DNNGY) for an even larger wind farm, Sunrise Wind, to power 600K homes.
