Moen has expanded beyond kitchen and bath fixtures with the launch of its Smart Sprinkler Controller line for residential irrigation. We reviewed the 16-zone version of the controller along with four Moen Smart Wireless Soil Sensors. While the system offers impressive features, such as the ability to deliver the right amount of water based on actual moisture levels, the app can be frustrating to use. On the positive side, the system integrates well with other Moen Smart Water Network products.
The Moen Smart Sprinkler Controller has a squarish design similar to the B-hyve controller and features a magnetic cover. It is designed for interior wall installation and requires connection to an electrical outlet. An outdoor enclosure is available for mounting the controller outside.
All control of the Smart Sprinkler Controller is done through the Moen Smart Water app, which also supports other Moen smart water products. Installation involves wiring the controller to irrigation zones and any accessories. The app guides users through the setup process, including scanning a QR code on the controller, connecting to Wi-Fi, and identifying and labeling wires.
Once setup is complete, users can customize irrigation zones by adding descriptions, vegetation type, sun exposure, soil type, ground slope, and sprinkler head type. Zones can be enabled or disabled, and schedules can be set up to automate irrigation based on specific frequencies, start times, and durations.
The app also offers weather-based schedule skips by integrating with hyperlocal weather stations. Users can select a weather station from the app and enable the Weather Based Skips feature for each zone. This feature allows the system to adjust irrigation based on real-time weather conditions.
Overall, Moen’s Smart Sprinkler Controller offers advanced features for smart irrigation, but the app can be frustrating to use. However, it integrates well with other Moen Smart Water Network products, making it a viable option for homeowners looking to upgrade their irrigation system.
