Meta Platforms Inc Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg revealed on Friday that he suffered a torn ACL while training for a mixed martial arts (MMA) fight and underwent surgery to have it replaced.
The 39-year-old shared this news as well as a picture of himself in his hospital bed on social media.
“Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it. Grateful for the doctors and team taking care of me. I was training for a competitive MMA fight early next year, but now that’s delayed a bit. Still looking forward to doing it after I recover. Thanks to everyone for the love and support,” his Instagram post reads.
Zuckerberg took up MMA during the pandemic, and since then, his involvement has become more serious, even constructing an octagonal fighting ring in his backyard.
In May, Zuckerberg participated in his first Jiu-Jitsu tournament and won gold and silver medals. He wrote, “Competed in my first jiu jitsu tournament and won some medals for the Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu team. Thanks to Dave Camarillo, Khai Wu, and James Terry for training me!”
He also shared pictures of his participation and victory in the tournament.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a ground-based martial art that focuses on leverage, angles, pressure, timing, and knowledge of human anatomy to achieve non-violent submission of one’s opponent.
Zuckerberg is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Meta, formerly known as Facebook, which he established in 2004. He is responsible for setting the company’s overall direction and product strategy.
In October 2021, Facebook rebranded as Meta to encompass all its products and services across its family of apps and to concentrate on developing social experiences for the metaverse, moving beyond 2D screens and embracing immersive technologies like augmented and virtual reality to pioneer the next phase of social technology.
