OpenAI Faces Turmoil
The highly regarded company OpenAI faced upheaval when CEO and co-founder Sam Altman was fired by the board of directors. Mira Murati, the CTO, was appointed as the acting CEO. However, employees and investors protested the decision and advocated for Altman’s reinstatement. The board approached Nat Friedman and Emmett Shear to take over as CEO, but both declined. Microsoft then hired Altman and other individuals to lead a new AI technology venture. The drama continued as the majority of OpenAI’s key leaders either signed a letter demanding the reinstatement of Altman and former President Greg Brockman or resigned. The board refused to share the reasons for Altman’s firing, but rumors suggest disagreements over AI safety, technology development pace, and commercialization strategy. However, it is speculated that Altman’s side ventures also contributed to the conflict. On Tuesday, OpenAI announced that Altman would return as CEO with a new initial board.
Kyutai Raises Funding for AI Research
Paris-based non-profit laboratory Kyutai raised $330 million to support open research in AI.
