One of the defense systems in Israel is the Iron Dome, which uses radar to detect projectiles and launch defensive missiles to destroy them before they reach populated areas. Another system, called David’s Sling, can identify rockets from a greater distance, up to 180 miles away.
Both systems are expensive to research and build, with the new US aid package allocating $15 billion to replenish Israel’s missile stockpile. Each missile can cost between $100,000 to $10 million, and during intense conflict periods, systems like Iron Dome may fire missiles daily.
The aid comes at a time when funding for Israel has become controversial due to the situation faced by displaced Palestinians in Gaza. While the spending bill was being debated in Congress, more Democrats pushed for conditions on military aid to Israel, especially after an Israeli airstrike killed aid workers from World Central Kitchen. Although the funding package includes $9 billion in humanitarian assistance, attempts to impose conditions on Israeli military aid were unsuccessful.
Taiwan and underwater defenses against China
A growing concern for the US defense community is the potential amphibious invasion of Taiwan by China. To counter this threat, the US is increasing the deployment of advanced submarines, as larger numbers of submarines would deter attacks from China and protect Taiwan.
However, the US shipbuilding efforts have been slow due to budget cuts and labor shortages. The new aid bill aims to accelerate this by providing $3.3 billion for the production of Columbia-class and Virginia-class submarines.
In addition to supporting Taiwan through submarine production, the aid package also includes $2 billion to help Taiwan purchase weapons and defense equipment from the US.
The US’s Iranian drone problem
Iran’s Shahed drones are frequently used in conflicts, including against Israel. These drones, resembling model planes, are fast, cheap, and lightweight, making them ideal for one-way attacks. US experts believe that these drones are giving an advantage to Russian and Iranian military groups and their allies.
One challenge in combating these drones is the cost. While the drones are affordable at around $40,000, shooting them down can cost millions in ammunition.
