The government has announced in its second advance estimate that wheat production for the 2023-24 crop year is projected to reach a record 112.01 million tonnes, sources revealed on Thursday.
This estimate is 1.46 million tonnes higher than the previous record of 110.55 million tonnes achieved in the 2022-23 crop year.
According to sources, the Agriculture Ministry has projected the total wheat output for the 2023-24 crop year to be 112.01 million tonnes in its second advance estimate.
Wheat, the main rabi (winter) crop, is now ready for harvest, and procurement is scheduled to start in some states next month.
For the 2024-25 rabi marketing season (March-April), the government has set a procurement target ranging from 30-32 million tonnes, which is a conservative estimate compared to the actual procurement of 26.2 million tonnes in the previous year.
The ministry releases three estimates at different stages of plant growth and harvesting before the final projection is made.
