Airbnb and Emily’s List alum Laphonza Butler has become California’s newest senator following the passing of longtime leader Dianne Feinstein. Butler made her first public appearance since taking office at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit on Monday. During a conversation with Fortune’s Emma Hinchliffe, Butler discussed her plans for California while avoiding questions about the 2024 Senate race. Butler’s appointment as senator is historic, as she is the first openly lesbian Black senator and the only Black woman currently serving in the Senate.
