Chinese President Xi Jinping began a tour of Europe on Sunday, sparking debates on how to handle Beijing’s increasing influence and the rivalry between the U.S. and China.
European car manufacturers are facing tough competition from subsidized Chinese electric vehicles. Concerns have been raised about alleged Chinese espionage in European capitals. Additionally, China’s defense trade with Russia is causing worry among those in Europe who support Ukraine and fear further Russian aggression.
Despite these concerns, the economic ties between Europe and China are strong, with EU-China trade estimated at 2.3 billion euros per day. Xi is focused on strengthening relations with European leaders after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Xi’s trip includes visits to France, Serbia, and Hungary. France is advocating for greater economic and strategic independence for Europe. Serbia and Hungary are viewed as China-friendly countries with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and have received significant Chinese investments.
The U.S. will closely monitor Xi’s visit for any signs of wavering European support for its foreign policy objectives. There is also growing uncertainty in Europe about future U.S. support for trans-Atlantic allies.
Upon arrival in Paris, Xi was met by French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and faced protests from groups calling on France to address human rights issues in Tibet and among the Uyghur minority. Xi expressed hope for strategic alignment between China and France to promote stability in a turbulent world.
French President Emmanuel Macron will host Xi for a state visit on Monday. They will also meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to advocate for fairer trade practices and urge China to use its influence with Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine.
The EU is investigating Chinese subsidies and considering tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle exports. While China claims neutrality in the Ukraine conflict, it has been criticized for supporting Russia’s military capabilities.
