According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple is in the process of developing its own chip to power artificial intelligence software in data centers, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
Despite falling behind its competitors in AI technology, Apple has been avoiding questions about its plans in this area.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, mentioned in an interview with Reuters that the company is optimistic about its prospects in generative AI and is making significant investments in this field.
The project, internally known as Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), aims to utilize Apple’s chip design expertise for its server infrastructure.
Although Project ACDC has been in progress for several years, it is unclear when or if the project will be officially announced.
The server chip developed by Apple is expected to focus on running AI models for inference rather than training AI models.
Apple has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment on this matter.
The company has been collaborating closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to design and begin production of these chips, although it is uncertain if a definitive outcome has been reached.
