Amazon has announced that it now employs over 750,000 robots to work alongside its employees, taking on repetitive tasks and allowing employees to better serve customers.
One of Amazon’s latest robotic systems, called Sequoia, has been launched just in time for the holiday shopping season. It is currently operating at a fulfillment center in Houston, Texas.
Sequoia revolutionizes how Amazon stores and manages inventory, resulting in faster listing of items for sale on Amazon.com. It also reduces order processing time by up to 25%, improving shipping predictability and expanding the range of products available for Same-Day or Next-Day shipping.
Sequoia integrates multiple robot systems to containerize Amazon inventory, using mobile robots, gantry systems, robotic arms, and ergonomic workstations. It transports inventory to a gantry, where it is restocked or handed over to employees for order fulfillment.
The new ergonomic workstations allow employees to complete their tasks comfortably and safely. Sparrow, Amazon’s newest robotic arm, assists in consolidating inventory in totes for efficient storage management.
Sequoia simplifies and optimizes Amazon’s storage and retrieval processes, leading to improved workplace safety and reduced risk of injuries for employees.
Amazon Robotics continues to invest in automation, including testing mobile manipulator solutions and partnering with Agility Robotics to test their bipedal robot, Digit.
Amazon’s goal is to create collaborative robotics systems that support employees. The company has introduced hundreds of thousands of robots while also creating new job opportunities within its operations.
