The Home Repairs You Should Never Do Yourself

You can see why people want to take care of all their home’s requirements themselves. It can help to save money, and plus, it’s just nice to feel that you’re in charge of your property’s maintenance.

However, while there are plenty of home tasks that you can tackle yourself, there are some that you should always hand over to a professional. Trying to manage complex jobs yourself can be dangerous, and there’s a high chance that you’ll make the problem worse, which will then require more money to fix than would be originally needed.

Not sure which jobs you should leave to the professionals? We’ve got you covered. Below, we’ll run through a bunch of jobs that you should always pay someone else to do unless you have specific experience.

Anything Electrical

Well, we say anything electrical, but that’s not really the case. You can switch out a light bulb by yourself. Changing a socket cover is also pretty straightforward. But beyond that, it’s best to contact an electrician. Your home’s electrical circuit can appear pretty simple, but it’s really not — and one simple mistake can result in an expensive accident or, even worse, injury. It’s also worth noting that carrying out electrical work on your own is illegal in many jurisdictions.

Plumbing Work

Think you can engage in a repair job when you notice that you have a leak? It’s tempting to dust off your tools and try to fix it yourself, especially since you may have to wait until a plumber can come out to see you.

But if you do this, you’ll run the risk of creating an even bigger problem. And that will typically mean that you end up with an even bigger water mess that could be a real challenge to clean up. Fixing plumbing problems is relatively easy if you know what you’re doing. If you don’t, then pick up the phone and call a professional.

Roof Repair

It’s best to call a roofing professional even if your problem is relatively minor. Why? Because, well, if you have a multi-story property then you’ll have to work at a height, and that’s inherently dangerous. Your roof may not look that high from the ground, but trust us when we say you’ll begin to feel a little nervous once you’re actually up there. And it’s difficult to focus on both your safety and fix the problem at the same time.

You’d probably be able to repair your roof issue if it was on the ground. But it’s not. Plus, roofing experts are trained to identify other issues that non-professionals would likely miss.

Heating and Cooling

You can’t feel truly comfortable in your home during the summer and winter months if your HVAC system isn’t working correctly. When you face an issue, you’ll be eager to get things back working as quickly as possible — especially if it’s a cold, winter morning. However, keep in mind that home heating and cooling systems are a lot more complex than they appear, and in some cases can be dangerous when they’re in the wrong hands. So don’t try to tackle the job yourself. Instead, get in touch with an HVAC repair company and let them get your system back working at its best. Most companies offer quick service, so you can enjoy a cool/warm home as quickly as possible.

Asbestos Removal

Discovering that you may have asbestos in your home can be scary, and you’ll likely want it removed as quickly as you can. However, it’s important to remember that asbestos, while dangerous, is non-threatening while it’s still in your walls. It’s when it becomes airborne that it becomes an issue — and that only happens during the removal process. You should absolutely not try to remove asbestos on your own, since there’s a high chance that you’ll put yourself in danger. There are specific asbestos-removal processes and procedures that must be followed, and only a professional can do it.

Installing New Windows

On the face of it, installing new windows at a property can seem straightforward, especially to people who have a history of completing DIY projects. However, the window installation process is more complex than it appears. It requires precision and specific skills and tools, which the average homeowner is unlikely to possess. Plus, incorrect placement can damage the home and the windows, making it an expensive job to correct.

It’s good to push yourself from time to time, but generally not when it comes to DIY tasks. Having this job completed by a professional; if you really want to install your next set of windows, then take a course on how to do it correctly.

Exterior Painting

Thinking of painting a room in your home? Give it a try yourself — it’s an easy one to do, and even if you get it wrong, it’s not all that complicated to fix. But when it comes to painting the exterior of your house, it’s best to hire a professional to do the job. It’s a big job and if you try to do it yourself, it probably won’t be long before you come to regret your decision. Plus, exterior painting often involves working at heights, which can be dangerous in itself.

Tree Removal

It’s recommended to tackle many of your yard maintenance tasks yourself. Most of them are easy to do, plus it’s nice to work outside. However, there are some jobs, such as the removal of a tree, when it’s best to contact a professional. Even relatively small trees can be dangerous when they fall, and large trees can be extremely dangerous. A good tree removal expert will know exactly what to do to remove the tree without causing damage to your property.

Conclusion

It’s good to take a proactive approach to your home’s maintenance, but that doesn’t always mean doing the job yourself. Being a responsible homeowner involves knowing when to work, and when to hire someone else to do the job for you. And remember — if you’re ever in doubt, hire a pro.
