EverestLabs, in collaboration with the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), has developed a recycling system that uses robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to increase recycling rates. The system has been implemented at a material recovery facility in California and is expected to capture over 1 million used beverage cans per year. The funding for the project was provided by CMI members Ardagh Metal Packaging and Crown Holdings, who will receive a 50% share of the revenue generated from the captured cans. The Can Manufacturers Institute has found that up to 25% of aluminum beverage cans are missorted at material recovery facilities, resulting in significant revenue loss. The EverestLabs system aims to recapture this revenue by using AI and robotics to detect and sort recyclables, specifically aluminum cans. The system is easy to deploy and provides real-time analytics to track the recovery rate. The success of the project has led to plans for further deployment of the system in other facilities and for other packaging types.
