Udemy, an online learning platform, regularly collects data on the most popular courses on its platform. From their Q1 2024 report, we have identified the top tech and IT skills that are in demand. Explore these skills to help guide your tech career decisions.

The top 10 global emergent tech skill topics on Udemy are:

“Certifications are highly valuable in the tech industry,” said Scott Rogers, senior vice president of instructor and content strategy at Udemy. “Companies worldwide are increasingly requiring certifications for key technical roles in areas like cloud computing, project management, and security.”
Over 10 million people enrolled in IT certification courses on Udemy in the past year, according to Rogers.
Tech skills like Git, Oracle SQL, C#, Amazon AWS, and Python are reflective of the industry and were among the top emergent skills on Udemy.
Udemy also saw an increase in interest for courses on English as a second language, sustainability, and ChatGPT. The TOEIC Tests, a standard for English proficiency in business, was one of the most popular courses. Multinational businesses using English as their primary language drove interest in this topic.
Environmental, social, and governance-related courses saw a significant increase in popularity, as did courses related to ChatGPT.

LinkedIn, Indeed, and CompTIA also highlight in-demand tech skills that employers are looking for. According to LinkedIn, artificial intelligence and machine learning are the top skills, followed by data science and cybersecurity. Indeed found that generative AI was the highest-paid field in the industry. CompTIA lists artificial intelligence, technical support, networking, cloud computing, and Linux as the top five IT skills in demand for 2024.
Tech is a growing and lucrative field
With nearly 364,000 open job postings for tech jobs in December 2023, the tech industry is growing rapidly. Computer and information technology occupations are expected to grow faster than most jobs from 2022 to 2032, with a median annual salary of $104,420 in May 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
