At AWS re:Invent 2023, we unveiled Amazon Q Business, a generative artificial intelligence (generative AI)–powered assistant designed to answer questions, provide summaries, generate content, and securely complete tasks based on data and information from your enterprise systems. Amazon Q Business enables organizations to deploy a secure, private generative AI assistant that enhances users’ creativity, data-driven decision-making, efficiency, preparedness, and productivity. Customer feedback during the preview phase helped us prioritize enhancements to the service. Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of Amazon Q Business, which includes new features such as custom plugins, as well as a preview of Amazon Q Apps – generative AI–powered customized and shareable applications that can be created in a single step using natural language within your organization.
In this blog post, I will provide an overview of the key features of Amazon Q Business, including the new features now available, and explore the capabilities of Amazon Q Apps. Let’s dive in!
Introducing Amazon Q Business
Amazon Q Business seamlessly connects to over 40 popular enterprise data sources and stores document and permission information from sources like Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Microsoft 365, and Salesforce. It ensures secure access to content using existing credentials with single sign-on functionality, based on user permissions, and includes enterprise-level access controls. With Amazon Q Business, users can easily obtain answers to questions regarding company policies, products, business results, or code through its web-based chat assistant. By directing Amazon Q Business to enterprise data repositories, users can search, summarize, analyze trends, and engage in dialogues with the assistant. Amazon Q Business enables the creation of secure and private generative AI assistants with enterprise-grade access controls at scale. Additionally, users can employ administrative guardrails, document enrichment, and relevance tuning to customize and control responses in alignment with their company’s guidelines.
Key features of Amazon Q Business with new features now available:
1. End-user web experience: Users can ask questions, receive responses, ask follow-up questions, add new information with in-text source citations while maintaining context from previous answers, and create content through a new content creation mode.
2. Pre-built data connectors and plugins: Users can connect, index, and sync enterprise data using pre-built data connectors, Amazon Kendra retriever, web crawling, or direct document uploads. Plugins can be configured to perform actions in enterprise systems, such as creating a Jira issue or a Salesforce case.
3. Admin control and guardrails: Global controls can be configured to generate responses either from connected data sources or from large language models (LLM). Topic-level controls allow for the specification of restricted topics and behavior rules in response to those topics.
4. Enhanced enterprise-grade security and management: Integration with various AWS services for secure data connection and storage, access logs tracking, and support for Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) endpoints.
Additionally, starting April 30, AWS IAM Identity Center will be required for user identity management of all new applications. Amazon Q Business can be securely connected to AWS services for data storage, access control, and logging.
Stay tuned for the preview of Amazon Q Apps, a new feature within Amazon Q Business that allows users to create generative AI-powered apps based on company data easily and quickly without prior coding experience. Users can describe the app they want in natural language or use existing conversations where Amazon Q Business assisted them in solving a problem. Amazon Q Business will generate an app with a few clicks that can be shared across the organization.
To create a new Amazon Q App, users can simply choose Apps in the web experience, enter a text expression for a task, and explore various samples like content creator, interview question generator, meeting note summarizer, and grammar checker. With Amazon Q Apps, users can build and share apps effortlessly, leveraging the power of generative AI within their organization.
