A total of 54 trains on the Ambala-Amritsar route were cancelled on Saturday due to farmers blocking the tracks at the Shambhu railway station in Punjab’s Patiala district for the fourth consecutive day, according to officials.
The protestors are demanding the release of three farmers who were arrested by the Haryana Police during the ongoing protest. Railway officials stated that 54 trains were cancelled on Saturday because of the farmers’ demonstration.
Over the last three days, the protest has disrupted the movement of 380 trains, causing inconvenience to passengers, officials added.
The farmers, organized under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), have been protesting in Shambhu in Patiala district.
Starting on Wednesday, they began their protest by blocking the tracks on the Ambala-Ludhiana-Amritsar route in Shambhu near the Punjab-Haryana border to demand the release of the arrested farmers.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the protest will continue until the three farmers are released.
The SKM (Non-Political) and the KMM are leading the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmers to urge the government to meet their demands, which include a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
Since February 13, the farmers have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana after their march was halted by security forces.
