The AI Seoul Summit is set to be co-hosted by the UK and South Korea on the 21st and 22nd of May. The summit aims to facilitate the safe development of AI technologies, building on the collaborative framework established by the Bletchley Declaration.
This two-day event will include a virtual leaders’ session led by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, followed by an in-person meeting among Digital Ministers. The latter will be co-hosted by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho.
The summit is a continuation of the historic discussions at Bletchley Park last year, focusing on AI safety, inclusivity, and innovation. Its goal is to ensure that AI progress benefits humanity while minimizing risks and enhancing global governance on tech innovation.
Donelan expressed, “The summit we held at Bletchley Park was a generational moment. By bringing international governments and various voices together, we can develop a global approach to harness the transformative potential of AI safely and responsibly.”
Minister Lee Jong-Ho emphasized the importance of the upcoming Seoul Summit in advancing global cooperation on AI safety and innovation, stating, “AI is progressing rapidly, and it’s vital to establish global norms and governance to leverage technological innovations for the betterment of humanity.”
The UK’s focus on innovation is evident through initiatives like the Manchester Prize and the AI Safety Institute, the first state-backed organization dedicated to AI safety. This proactive stance demonstrates the UK’s commitment to international collaboration on AI governance, as seen in a recent agreement with the US on AI safety measures.
Alongside the Seoul Summit, the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety will be released. Led by Turing Prize winner Yoshua Bengio, this report consolidates top scientific research on AI safety, providing actionable insights for AI’s safe development.
The agenda of the AI Seoul Summit addresses the challenges and opportunities posed by AI, from model safety evaluations to sustainable AI development. As the world embraces AI innovation, the summit underscores efforts to shape a future where technology serves humanity safely, fostering prosperity and inclusivity.
