Mother nature can be cruel and harsh. Although your home may be built strong and durable, there are certain precautions you should take to keep it weather proof. Torrential rain, snow, and wind can all cause damage to property that isn’t just visible on the exterior.
If your property isn’t well maintained, it can cause flooding or water damage inside and it could be hard to heat during cold snaps. Here are some ways you can ensure your home remains safe and cozy.
Check Your Roof
The lifespan of roofing is generally long but that doesn’t mean that shingles won’t get damaged. When you have harsh weather conditions in your area, it could damage one or more of the shingles on your roof. Many people tend to think that this isn’t a big deal but it can lead to damage inside your property.
If you have a broken or loose shingle, you may notice water starting to come through your attic or damp walls upstairs. Make sure you have your roof evaluated at least once a year to prevent this from happening.
Drainage
There are many forms of drainage to check on the exterior of your property. Blocked drains could lead to flooding around your property or you be unlucky enough to have waste flood through your yard. It’s essential that you have your perimeter drainage checked to keep your property safe.
You should also have someone check your gutters so water can drain from your roof properly. When your gutters are blocked, this can also lead to leaks inside your home.
Insulation
If you notice that your property takes a lot of time to heat, it could be because there isn’t enough insulation. If this is the case, you may notice significant drafts around your home too. There could be crawl spaces that remain uninsulated throughout your property so it’s important to narrow them down.
Try and track down where the cold is coming from and see how much space you need to insulate. If it’s a small space, you may be able to insulate it yourself. If it’s a big space, you may want to contact a professional to do it for you.
Secure Outdoor Items
We’ve all seen stories of flying trampolines during heavy wind. No-one ever thinks it will happen to them but the truth is, it can happen to anyone. Fortunately, it’s easy to be prepared these days.
In most cases, weather warnings are given in advance so people can protect their properties. If you know strong winds are likely, either secure outdoor items or bring them indoors. These items can cause a threat to your property, other properties, and people if left outside.
Weather proofing your home is essential if you want to keep your property in good condition. It’s also a guarantee that you’ll be safe and warm in your home, even when the weather outside is terrible.
