Jospin Hassan faced challenges accessing education opportunities in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi, so he took matters into his own hands.
Recognizing the potential of data science and artificial intelligence to create job opportunities and address local issues, Hassan joined the MIT Refugee Action Hub (ReACT) Certificate Program in Computer and Data Science. He then shared his MIT knowledge and skills with other eager learners in Dzaleka.
Now known as Emerging Talent under the Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) at MIT Open Learning, the program provides high-quality computer science and data analysis coursework, professional skill building, experiential learning, apprenticeship work, and networking opportunities with MIT’s global community of innovators. Hassan and his cohort developed leadership skills through online workshops and the MIT Innovation Leadership Bootcamp.
Hassan now leads ADAI Circle, which offers mentorship and education programs in data science, AI, software development, and hardware design to youth and job seekers in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. The organization’s Innovation Hub provides internet access to those in need, aiming to foster job creation and reduce poverty through technology and innovation.
Founded in 2020, ADAI Circle was inspired by Hassan’s experience with MIT Emerging Talent and aims to empower the community through technology education. The organization’s annual hackathon, modeled after the MIT Bootcamps, helps students develop skills and solutions to benefit the community.
By leveraging his network from Emerging Talent, Hassan connected with organizations like Give Internet and MIT Open Learning’s RAISE program to expand ADAI Circle’s impact. The collaboration with RAISE led to a project-based AI curriculum for middle school students, bridging the AI gap to reach underserved communities.
Despite facing challenges, ADAI Circle continues to grow, with Hassan’s vision driving its success. The organization is focused on providing opportunities for learning and innovation in the community, making a tangible impact on the lives of its members.
“For those who want to learn data science, let’s let them learn,” Hassan says.
