According to “Globes,” Nielsen, a US information, data, and market measurement firm best known for media insights and analytics, is set to close its Israel office. Nielsen Israel, which is part of the firm’s research and development division, will be transferring its activities to India, as per a source close to the matter.

Nielsen gained recognition for “Rating Nielsen,” an audience measurement system for television viewership that has played a crucial role in determining whether a TV show should be continued or cancelled. Founded in 1923 to measure competitive sales, Nielsen was acquired by the VNU conglomerate in 1999. Following a reorganization in 2007, the company changed its name to Nielsen. In 2022, a consortium of private investors acquired Nielsen for $16 billion, according to Yahoo! Finance.

Nielsen buys Israeli big data co eXelate for $200m

In 2015, Nielsen entered the Israeli market by acquiring local startup eXelate, which had developed a platform for analyzing data on website users to enhance the effectiveness of Internet advertising. Nielsen paid $200 million for eXelate. In 2017, Nielsen also acquired Israeli startup vBrand, specializing in measuring the value and impact of sports sponsorship campaigns, which was integrated into the development center.

Last September, reports surfaced that Nielsen planned to reduce its global workforce by 9% to align expenditure with revenue and ensure the company’s future strength, according to Yahoo! Finance.

Operating in numerous countries, Nielsen had over 17,000 employees worldwide by the end of 2022, including several in Israel, as per LinkedIn.

Industry sources informed “Globes” that despite the downsizing of the Israeli workforce and the relocation of development operations to India, there are no immediate plans to completely shut down Nielsen’s operations in Israel.

The company has not provided any response to queries.
