A recent report by IDC, titled “The Business Value of IBM Maximo,” surveyed nine companies with an average of 8,500 employees. The report found that after adopting IBM Maximo, these companies experienced several benefits. On average, each organization saw a business benefit of approximately USD 14.6 million per year. Additionally, there was a 43% reduction in unplanned downtime per year, and a total equipment cost avoidance of USD 8.6 million annually.
IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) is a cloud-based platform that integrates asset monitoring, management, predictive maintenance, and reliability planning. It utilizes AI and analytics to optimize asset performance, extend asset lifecycles, and reduce downtime and costs. To achieve maximum performance, it is recommended to host Maximo on a scalable infrastructure, leading to the current trend of migrating Maximo to the cloud. Migrating Maximo to the AWS Cloud has gained increased interest due to the need for operational resiliency, reliability, and data-driven asset management.
IBM has announced the end of support for all Maximo 7.6 and add-ons by September 2025, making Maximo migration and modernization even more important for clients. To support Maximo migration to AWS, IBM has made newer containerized versions of Maximo Application Suite available on the AWS Marketplace. This move represents a step towards integrating standalone Maximo applications into a cohesive suite of applications.
MAS SaaS is a subscription-based service offered on AWS. It provides an operational environment deployed on AWS and managed by IBM Site Reliability Engineering specialists. This collaboration allows customers to access an industry-leading asset management system supported by the scalability, agility, and cost-efficiency of AWS.
In a specific example, IBM worked with an energy company facing challenges such as longer infrastructure procurement times, high availability and performance issues with WebSphere, data sharing challenges, and manual deployment processes. The company chose to migrate to the latest version of Maximo, MAS8, on the AWS Cloud to address these challenges.
IBM took an approach that involved upgrading the existing Maximo application, deploying it using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for flexibility and scalability, utilizing AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) for data migration, and addressing data sharing using IBM Cloud Pak for Data and IBM Cloud Pak for Integration.
There are three deployment models available for running IBM MAS on AWS Cloud: MAS SaaS on AWS powered by RedHat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA), MAS dedicated on AWS powered by ROSA, and customer-hosted ROSA. The customer-hosted ROSA model offers greater control over the infrastructure, customization, and flexibility to tailor the environment to specific needs. It also allows for the implementation of additional MAS integrations and enforcement of existing cloud security and governance policies.
